lycra virgin - mock and toof (2006)
obviously new madonna sucks, save for that silly, ecstatic, irresistible abba sample. so what happens when you tamper with classic madonna? is there a way to make it better than it was before? probably not. 'like a virgin' is iconic and i'd imagine there's a "fuck it let's run with this" attitude going into re-editing or remixing it. it almost seems pointless, except that it's an amazing pop song that would be fun to toy with. so there are some neat ideas that mock and toof play with in 'lycra virgin'. at first i thought that title was just a punny play on words, but listening to it reveals that the title is exactly what this sounds like - bits have been stretched and warped like an overused bodysuit, synth lines become bouncy and sinuous, and the song goes wonkoid pop as if we've stepped into one of those cartoony mirrors with the wavy gravy surface. i actually played this at our club night and i think it really confused the girls on the dancefloor. there was a lot of improvised "woo!"s and singing lyrics where there are none in the remix. you can stream a few more tracks over at mock and toof's myspace page, and their remix of the juan maclean's 'love is in the air' is out in may.
