the best thing

is when you're totally smashed and playing all your favorite songs and you're surrounded by friends and they start tossing about all these descriptives that you never thought about before but are DEAD ON. witness:

dance dance dance - marta acuna (1977)
pammm called this "e.s.l. disco" - e.s.l. is "english as a second language" in case you dunno. this was produced by patrick adams and issued in the u.s., but the mysterious marta acuna starts off with some spanish and sings in a very charming broken english. apparently i play a lot of this kind of accented e.s.l. disco. if you like the sound of this, personal touch's "it ain't no big thing" has the same vibe with bittersweet lyrics (no accent tho). kudos to al for getting me on this one.

sea hunt - patrick cowley (1981)
will was screaming in my face "OH MY GOD THIS SOUNDS LIKE PORPOISES FUCKING IN OUTER SPACE" which IT DOES. i think this is the sort of thing that people will either really like or just totally won't get into, cuz it's so dramatic. i'm pretty sure i read that this is a cover of something that was originally recorded in 1958. it goes to some amazing places towards the end ... you know those sounds that feel like they're the best, most unbelieveable thing you've ever heard? i am THAT into this. this track goes DEEEP ...

i had mentioned dylan martorell in this blog a while ago and i recently received an invite to an upcoming show. alas i don't live in melbourne, BUT there is a blog where you can check out some of his work:

HIDDEN ARCHIVE

and of course, i have to thank everyone who came out to the glass candy/ chromatics show on saturday - it was so awesome!! totally a trip to see ida dancing to my set from behind the merch booth ... and into the crowd ... onto the stage ....

xoxo!!

I'm loving the "Grownup Disco" (for lack of a better description) songs you're posting, like the Marta Acuna and that Chantal Curtis number you posted a while back.

I have no idea how you dig these things up, but uh, yeah... thanks!

PS: I can't even find that Clive Stevens "Mystery Man" track except on vinyl. That's another favourite.
